Support Women Owned
For my "Support Women Owned" project, I designed an impactful poster and an iPhone application dedicated to showcasing women-owned businesses across the United States. The primary goal was to create a centralized platform where users could easily discover and support female-owned shops.
My approach emphasized diversity and inclusivity, featuring a broad range of businesses to ensure comprehensive representation. I aimed for a clean and minimal design aesthetic, integrating images for each shop to provide users with a clear understanding of what each business offers.
I chose a red and pink color palette to resonate with the target audience, symbolizing the app's focus on women. This thoughtful design choice helps convey the app's purpose and appeal directly to its intended users.
Research
A few weeks were spent researching and planning this concept. My biggest findings included:
- Men own a greater share of small businesses overall. About six in ten small businesses (61%) were majority-owned by men in 2021, while 22% were majority-owned by women. Another 14% were owned equally by men and women.
- The most common ethnicity of business owners is White (70.8%), followed by Hispanic or Latino (14.4%), Asian (6.2%) and Black or African American (6.0%)
- 10% of all business owners are LGBTQ+.
